On Spatial Wandering
“Technology has spent decades shortening the interval between desire and result: from rewinding tapes to dragging a digital slider.
Architecture risks doing the same. When spatial journeys are replaced only by efficiency, we lose the pauses where thought begins.”
From the original text:
“Once, to find a moment in music we had to search for it- rewinding tape, listening carefully, learning patience through trial and error. Then came CDs, with buttons that leapt forward or backward. Now we simply drag a slider and arrive instantly.
The quiet mission of technological progress seems to be the removal of intervals from our lives-cutting the journey, the exploration, the waiting.
Architecture has not escaped this shift. The spatial pilgrimage through a building is increasingly replaced by value engineering and efficiency, compressing experience into the most economical form. Yet in doing so we risk eliminating the very pauses where thought emerges.
Future generations will need spaces not only to do things, but spaces to slow down, wander, and think.”
